Jana's Campaign

Father of Victim Works With Domestic Violence Offenders

Curt BrungardtOver the last six months, Curt Brungardt, stepfather of the late Jana Mackey, has been meeting and working directly with dozens of convicted domestic violence abusers.  Through group therapy sessions in batterers intervention programs with Topeka’s YWCA and Catholic Charities of Shawnee County, Brungardt shares his family story of July 3, 2008 and the loss of Jana.  He challenges these men to live better lives and to always treat their partners with dignity and respect.

"Curt's presentation of Jana’s story makes it impossible for group members to ignore the devastating impact of violence," said Steve Halley, YWCA facilitator.  "Curt has the ability to connect with these men in a way that is non-judgmental, yet challenging.  He has a powerful message and expectations that we all – must be better men."  Along with Christie Brungardt, Jana's mother, Curt co-chairs the Attorney General's Batterers Intervention Program Advisory Board for the state of Kansas.
