Higher Education
We believe colleges and universities can and should do more to prevent relationship violence. We work to provide higher education institutions with training opportunities and resources to improve their prevention and response efforts to sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking on campus
At least 1 in 5 women experience sexual assault while attending college. Among college-age perpetrators of abuse, approximately 25% perpetrate physical aggression (e.g. punching, slapping and shoving/push-ing), 80% perpetrate psychological aggression (e.g. threats of violence and derogatory comments) and 20% perpetrate sexual aggression. Physical violence has been found in up to 45% of college relationships, sexual violence in up to 20%, and psychological/emotional violence in up to 80% |
More than 3.5 million college students experience dating violence before graduation. Among college-age youth, 45% of the gay males, 57% of bisexual males, 44% of lesbians, and 38% of bisexual females have experienced abuse. An estimated 7% of men and 21% of women report experiencing a completed sexual assault since entering college. In 12-22 year olds the prevalence for technology assisted dating violence victimisation ranged from 12 to 56%. |

Regional Campus Safety Summits
Jana’s Campaign hosts regional and affordable conferences designed to educate college and university administrators, faculty, staff, and students on the important issues of preventing and responding to sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. These Summits host national experts and regional practitioners while encouraging the sharing of best practices among participants.
Individuals who most benefit from these summits include: Title IX officers, college/university legal representatives, public and campus safety officers, residential life and student affairs personnel, athletic directors, women’s center staff, student leaders, health and counseling professionals, and other campus and community representatives interested in campus safety.
Thanks to partnerships with corporate and foundation sponsors, Jana's Campaign is able to keep these two-day regional Summit registration fees extremely affordable. Our rationale is to encourage campuses to send multi-disciplinary teams to attend, increasing the impact of the Summit on every campus represented. We are committed to hosting a wide range of regional campus safety representatives at every Summit while maintaining the highest quality conference of its kind.

Workshops and Presentations
Jana’s Campaign has professional trained staff, board members, and volunteers who are available to serve as speakers at your event, conference, or school. We tailor our message to fit various audiences and the needs of each location. Our presentations and workshops are designed to enhance our programming options. This includes all-school assemblies, individual classroom workshops and gender-specific presentations that include Her Toolkit and Man2Man, as well as bystander intervention trainings. Fees are often based on school/conference budget considerations, and all proceeds from speaking engagements go to support Jana’s Campaign, Inc.
Our Other Projects
![]() The Campus Men’s Action Network (CMAN) is an organizational model developed by Jana’s Campaign that encourages college men to develop a campus coalition and actively engage in the work to end gender-based violence. To learn more about CMAN click here.
![]() In partnership with the Women’s Leadership Project, Jana’s Campaign helps deliver the collegiate prevention program “The Red Flag Campaign” on the campus of Fort Hays State University every October. The Red Flag Campaign is a public awareness campaign designed to address dating violence and promote the prevention of dating violence on college campuses. The campaign was created using a “bystander intervention” strategy, encouraging friends and other campus community members to “say something” when they see warning signs (“red flags”) for dating violence in a friend’s relationship. The campaign posters reflect racially and ethnically diverse models, and illustrate both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. See the Red Flag Campaign here.

![]() In honor and memory of Jana Lynne Mackey, the University of Kansas has established the “Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series.” In an effort to continue Jana’s important work, this lecture series was established to raise awareness about issues close to Jana’s heart, namely breaking down barriers and fostering opportunities to secure women’s rights leaders and experts with the dual purpose of enhancing understanding and calling for involvement and service while providing a platform for discussion and dialogue. ![]() Drs. Curt and Christie Brungardt, founders of Jana’s Campaign, Inc. and Emeritus professors at Fort Hays State University (Hays, KS) served as guest editors of a special issue for the eJournal of Public Affairs. This unique publication focuses on higher education’s role in preventing and responding to relationship-based violence. The eJournal issue includes peer reviewed scholarly manuscripts illustrating the latest assessment data and research in the field and practitioner-based articles focusing on best practices and programming highlights. This online issue also includes multimedia submissions. See the eJournal here.
