Jana’s Campaign board member Mark Russell, of Houston TX, has recently been appointed to the public policy committee of the Texas Council on Family Violence. Again, this year’s committee will focus on appropriations for family violence shelter and resource centers, restoration of funding for Battering Intervention Prevention Programs (BIPPs) and changes to the substantive laws that TCFV and the PPC identify as priorities.

Kelley Parker, Jana’s Campaign Vice President, has been appointed Chair of our capital campaign steering committee for 2012. Ms. Parker is a development officer for the Colorado Springs Zoo in Colorado Springs, CO.. Our board of directors has established our Capital Campaign goal at $100,000. More information about our initial fundraising program will be coming shortly.
Curt Brungardt of Jana’s Campaign was the lead-off speaker at the Y Factor National Summit in San Francisco, CA. Eighty participants discussed global strategies toengaging men in reducing violence against women. Special guest at the summit included MLB Hall of Famer Willie Mays, MLB former manager Joe Torre and World Middleweight Champion boxer Sergio Martinez. Curt shared Jana’s story and called the men to action. This event was hosted by Futures Without Violence.
In recognition of teen dating violence awareness and prevention month, Wichita’s Start Strong campaign hosted a “Final Friday Teen Art show” at the Shopkeeper’s Gallery on Friday, February 24th from 6-10pm. The featured artist Jordan Tarrant, produced a 3D image of our Jana. Christie and Curt Brungardt will also be speaking at the event.
Starting in May 2012, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is using the “Jana’s Story” video as a part of its firearms retail certification training. The NICS User Conference is held annually for firearms retailers. Federal prohibitors to firearm purchase/possession include: felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence; and active restraining orders, many of which relate to domestic violence.
